1. Start With How You Actually Live
Before a single material or colour is chosen, we walk through how a family actually uses each room — where shoes come off, where the morning coffee happens, who needs a quiet corner to work. A layout built around real habits ages far better than one built to impress in a photo.
2. Choose a Restrained Material Palette
Two or three materials, repeated consistently through a home, read as considered. Ten different finishes fighting for attention read as indecision. Pick your palette early — a wood tone, a stone or tile, a metal finish — and let it carry through every room.
3. Let Natural Light Lead the Layout
Furniture placement should respond to where the light actually falls through the day, not just to the shape of the room. A reading chair in a shaded corner rarely gets used; the same chair by a window usually does.
4. Invest in Storage Before Décor
The interiors that stay looking finished are the ones with enough storage that daily life doesn’t spill onto the countertops. It’s a less exciting line item than furniture or lighting, but it’s the one that determines whether a home still looks the way you designed it a year in.
5. Furnish for the Room You Have, Not the One You Want
An oversized sofa in a small living room, or a delicate piece lost in a large one, undoes good design instantly. We always take room dimensions into the furniture conversation from day one, rather than fitting furniture in after the fact.
